We Simplified Our Daily Quotes

We want our use of other people’s words to be simple and clear. This round, we made our daily quotes easier to stand behind.

What changed

  • Sources we kept. Our daily quotes now come from historical speeches, books, scripture, and hymns in the public domain, each with a named source.

  • Quotations from songs, interviews, films, and television were removed from the daily quote feature. Because of this, the Music Wisdom page has been retired. If you saved its address, it now sends you to the main quotes page.

  • Three quotes now name their source. Frederick Douglass (a speech, 1857), Booker T. Washington (Up from Slavery, 1901), and Malala Yousafzai (her Nobel Peace Prize lecture, 2014) replace or join earlier entries that had no named author.

  • One saying now says so plainly. A common saying with no known author is now labeled “Author unknown.”

  • Two entries moved. A psalm now appears under Ancient Wisdom in the King James wording, and a hymn now appears under Uplifting.

  • Song lines on our Bob Marley pages now describe the message instead. The same went for a wellness note that opened with a line from a song. That note now has a new title and web address (the old address still works), and its wording now says what research suggests instead of promising an outcome. Where a page printed lines from a song word for word, it now explains what the song says in our own words.
